The design challenge posed in this project was to select seven famous graphic designers and create a poster with text quoting them while also trying to mimic their design style. One of the designers I picked was Swiss graphic designer Armin Hoffman. His work has a high contrast between text and imagery. His imagery would almost always take a back seat to his text, which was impressive considering that the imagery added so much from how he altered its looks to give a sense of motion. My selected quote is, “There should be no separation between spontaneous work with an emotional tone and work directed by the intellect.” I then found the image that I wanted to use for my poster. The picture needed to show a person in motion, so I selected a dynamic picture of a male ballerina in action. I edited the photo in Photoshop, first converting the image into grayscale, then playing with the intensities of the blacks and whites for the contrast you would see in Hoffman’s work.
I would then adjust the grain, giving it a vintage film feel. My final adjustment would be adding blur effects to exaggerate the motion. After I finished my image, I would do my type around it. I would keep the type white, so I had to return to the image and change its white to an eggshell white color so the type could be prominent in the poster. Wrapping up the project, I would then add the final details around my poster, a border, and an illusion effect that would tie the photo’s subject into the border. An effect that exaggerated the ballerina’s form even more.
